A health certificate, officially known as the "Health Check-up Result Certificate," is mandatory under Korean Food Sanitation Law for anyone employed in food-related industries. It is designed to identify individuals with potentially contagious diseases early, preventing transmission through food. This requirement applies equally to all individuals working in food sectors, regardless of nationality or employment type.
Therefore, if you plan to work or have a part-time job at restaurants, cafes, or similar establishments, you must obtain this health certificate before starting work.
Visit the nearest public health center (보건소) with your passport or Alien Registration Card and fill out an application form. Some health centers offer electronic registration via kiosks.
※ You can also get tested at designated hospitals, but these typically have higher fees compared to public health centers.

The entire process, from registration to the medical examination, usually takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour. The fee at a public health center is approximately 3,000 KRW. Results are available within 2-5 days and can be collected directly at the health center or printed online via the Government 24 website (https://www.gov.kr).
※ For online printing, you need a digital authentication certificate (공동인증서 or 간편인증서).
After receiving your health certificate, submit it to your employer before beginning work. The certificate is valid for one year (for general restaurant industry), after which another health check is required. If your certificate is still valid, you don't need a new examination even if you change your workplace.
