What is GKS?
GKS is a scholarship program for international students, managed by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea. It aims to foster global talent and build international networks by inviting outstanding students from around the world to study in Korea with various forms of financial support. There are several types of GKS programs, but today we will focus on the most representative one — the Degree Program.

 

What is the GKS Degree Program?
When people refer to “GKS,” they usually mean this degree program. It supports international students who wish to study in Korea for an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.

Simply put, the Korean government covers the necessary expenses for your study in Korea, including the Korean language training period. The duration of support varies depending on the degree level.

Associate applicant: High school graduate

Bachelor’s applicant: Associate degree holder

Grades

Minimum GPA of 80% or higher in the previous program

[Master’s / Doctoral Degree]

Under 40
For professors from ODA beneficiary countries: under 45

Education

Master’s applicant: Bachelor’s degree holder

Doctoral applicant: Master’s degree holder

Grades

Minimum GPA of 80% or higher in the previous program

 💸 Scholarship Benefits and Duration

Selected GKS scholars receive full financial support for both academic and living expenses, including:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Korean language training fees
  • University tuition
  • Settlement allowance
  • Insurance, living expenses, etc.

The support period includes a 1-year Korean language course, plus the duration of the degree program:

Associate: 2–3 years, Bachelor’s: 4–6 years, Master’s: 2 years, Doctorate: 3 years
