"Can I drive in Korea with my foreign driver’s license?"

If you are planning to stay in Korea long-term, you may have wondered about this.

Here is a clear guide to the key rules foreign drivers need to know.

① Driving with a foreign license for 1 year after entry

If you have an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a recognized foreign license, you can drive in Korea for up to 1 year from your date of entry without a Korean license.

⚠️ You may only drive the vehicle types listed on your license.

② After 1 year? Korean license required

If you stay longer than 1 year or plan long-term residence, you must obtain a Korean driver’s license.

However, if you already hold a foreign license, some parts of the test may be exempted.

[Eligible applicants]

• Naturalized citizens
• Registered foreigners
• Recognized refugees
• Overseas Koreans with residence registration

[Requirements for foreign license]

• Issued by an authorized government institution
• Obtained after more than 90 days of stay in that country
• Must be a valid (not temporary) license

③ Exemptions vary by country

The exemption scope depends on whether your country is recognized by Korea.
