Starting in January 2025, Korea’s Ministry of Justice will begin issuing Mobile Alien Registration Cards for foreigners. While mobile ID cards have been widely used by Koreans, this convenient service is now expanding to foreigners as well.
If you are 14 years or older, living in Korea, and own a smartphone under your name, you are eligible to apply. If your smartphone is lost, the mobile ID will automatically be disabled to protect your personal information.
The mobile alien registration card carries the same legal authority as the physical card, and can be used at government offices, banks, convenience stores, hospitals, and more.
You no longer need to carry your physical card everywhere or worry about losing it.
Also, if you lose your smartphone, you can easily re-register the mobile card on a new device.
(*Note: If you have an old-style alien registration card, you will need to visit the immigration office to re-register.)
Very few countries in the world have rolled out mobile ID systems yet.
If you haven’t applied for your Mobile Alien Registration Card yet, why not take this opportunity to experience a new, digital lifestyle?
