Extension of D-2 Visa Stay Period

If you wish to continue residing in Korea, you must obtain an extension of your stay before the expiration of your current stay period.

    Extension Period

    • 1)

      The stay period will be granted considering the education schedule (no stay period exceeding the education duration will be granted).

    • 2)

      Individuals who suspend their studies (e.g., leave of absence) due to personal reasons or insufficient credits are restricted from extending their stay.
      Exceptions may be granted in cases of unavoidable circumstances such as illness or accidents.

      D-2-1, D-2-2 D-2-3, D-2-4 D-2-7
      • Extension possible within 1 year, up to the month following the semester's end.
        (Typically, semesters end in February and August, with the permitted extension months being March and September.)
      • For accredited universities, extension is possible within 2 years, up to the month following the semester's end.
        (Even for accredited universities, extensions for expected graduates are limited to within 1 year.)
      • For extended semesters, extensions are granted in increments of 6 months.

      • Extensions are granted annually.
      D-2-6, D-2-8
      • Extension possible within 1 year, up to the month following the completion of the educational program.
        (Typically, educational programs end in December and June, with the permitted extension months being January and July.)

    Extension Application Methods

    • 1)

      Applications can be submitted: In-person at the local immigration office (based on residence or school location) starting 4 weeks before the expiration date or Online via Hi Korea.

      Applications can also be submitted by a representative:

      The representative must be an employee of the institution where the applicant is currently enrolled or plans to enroll. Most extensions are processed through representatives. Introduction to the role of international student coordinators

      Passport and Alien Registration Card

      Certificates of completion, and confirmation forms from the academic advisor or international student coordinator (Form Link)

    • 4)

      Documents proving academic progress
      Academic transcript, certificate of enrollment, attendance record, tuition payment receipt, etc.

    • 5)

      Financial proof documents:
      Bank balance certificate (required amount varies depending on the school or nationality).

    • 6)

      Proof of residence documents:
      Lease agreement, accommodation confirmation, notification of stay expiration, utility bill receipts, dormitory fee receipts, etc.

    • 7)

      For representative applications:
      Power of attorney, employment certificate, copy of the representative's ID, and copies of the applicant's passport or Alien Registration Card.
